10 Facts To Know About The Legendary Biggie Smalls

The Legendary Notorious B.I.G., also known as Biggie Smalls died today on the 9th of March, 1997 exactly 21 years ago. Here are ten things you may not have known about the legendary rapper.

  1. Biggie never won a Grammy.
    Biggie joins the likes of 2Pac and Busta Rhymes as hip-hop greats who have never won a Grammy award. In fact, Macklemore has more Grammys than Biggie, 2Pac, Busta Rhymes and DMX combined. 
  2. The Notorius BIG was not always named Notorius BIG.
    Biggie’s first rap moniker was MC Quest. He would eventually switch to Biggie Smalls. When another rapper laid claim to Biggie Smalls, he changed his name once again to The Notorious B.I.G. But he loves it when you call him Big Poppa.
  3. Biggie and Tupac were close friends.
    One of the tragedies of the Biggie vs 2Pac feud is that it destroyed their friendship. Both Biggie and 2Pac were originally from the east coast. Biggie used to open for 2Pac, and Pac addressed Biggie by his first name, Christopher. Biggie even visited 2Pac at the hospital when he was shot the first time. He met Pac’s dad and offered his help, if needed. Unfortunately, the Sith Lord whispered in Pac’s ear and convinced him Biggie was behind that shooting.
  4. Tupac got Biggie his first Rolex.
    Everyone knows that Pac and Biggie used to be good friends before they ignited the rap feud which started the great East vs West Coast rap beef. But Pac also apparently bought Big his first Rolex – highlighting how tight they once were.
  5. His parents were born in Jamaica
    If you listen closely to some of Biggie’s lyrics, you’ll notice they’re laced with Caribbean patois, such as “bludclart crying,” and “lamb’s bread” instead of weed.
  6. Michael Jackson used Biggie for a verse
    Michael Jackson didn’t work with a lot of rappers, but he did request for a chance to work with Biggie for his 1995 track “This Time Around.”
  7. Notorious B.I.G was not supposed to be in the LA on the night of his death.
    Biggie was supposed to be on a plane to London on the night he died, but instead went to a party in LA to celebrate finishing his second album ‘Life After Death.’ Diddy recalls; “That morning I got a call from Biggie. … He was supposed to go to London. He called me and said, ‘I’m not going to London’.” Diddy continued: “The call just plays over and over in my head… What if he would have just got on the plane?”
  8. Biggie had some pretty famous school-mates.
    Biggie went to George Westinghouse Information Technology School in downtown Harlem, the same school that Busta Rhymes, DMX and Jay Z.
  9. The ‘Ready To Die’ album cover’s baby was payed 150 Dollars.
    The baby is a now a 22-year old basketball player called Keithrov Yearwood living in the US. What did he make for appearing on the album that would go down in history and be regarded as one of the best albums ever to be made in hip-hop? 150$.
  10. His teachers told him he’d be a garbage collector.
    Biggie’s teacher told him that he would likely be a garbage collector when he was older, his mum recalls Biggie telling the story of how he did some research and got back to the teacher the next day, saying “A teacher makes a starting salary of 22,500. A garbage collector start at 29,000… You said some of us inside here are gonna be garbage collectors. But we’re gonna be making more money than you, so that’s cool.”
